Each class will include a read aloud portion, discussion, assigned reading and instruction for homework for the week. We will cover one book per month.

Course Description: Beyond Five in a Row is a literature-based, teacher-driven, unit study curriculum designed for children around age 8 to 12. It acts as a bridge from picture books to chapter books, using two fiction and two non-fiction books per semester to cover history, science, language arts, and art. Each class will include a read aloud portion, discussion, assigned reading and instruction for homework for the week. We will cover one book per month.

Course Length:  Semesters 1 and 2

Day/Time: Tuesday 9:00-9:55

Cost:  $120/ semester

Supply Fee:  $0

Class Prerequisite:  3rd grade reading level

Materials Teacher Will Provide:  I will provide all classroom supplies.

Materials Students Must Provide: Lined notebook paper in a binder. Pencils,
Each student must have their own copy of 4 novels per semester.

Semester 1: The Boxcar Children by Gertrude Chandler Warner (fiction)
Homer Price by Robert McCloskey (fiction)
Thomas Edison by Sue Guthridge (non-fiction)
Betsy Ross by Ann Weil from the “Childhood of Famous Americans” series (non-fiction)

Semester 2: Sarah, Plain and Tall and Skylark by Patricia MacLachlan (both fiction)
The Story of George Washington Carver by Eva Moore (non-fiction)
Helen Keller by Margaret Davidson from Scholastic Biographies (non-fiction)

Minimum Enrollment:  8

Maximum Enrollment:  12

Parent Requirements: Make sure your student stays up with the reading and any possible chapter assignments that go home
